Lazarus is open source
Lazarus is the open source core of the AI operating system OpenLazarus builds for companies. Each company gets its own workspace, and AI agents work inside it: they answer email, work in Slack, Discord and WhatsApp, keep the company’s files and data, run on schedules and triggers, and stay within the permissions you set. The code is on GitHub under Apache-2.0. Run it yourself, or let us design and run it for you.

What’s in the repository
- Workspaces
- One per company or team, with its files, its data (SQLite databases agents can query and update), its knowledge and its settings.
- AI agents
- Built on the Claude Agent SDK, each with its own instructions, tools and permissions. Teams, invitations and per-workspace access are built in.
- Triggers
- Agents act on a schedule or when something happens, not only when someone chats with them.
- Inboxes and channels
- An email inbox per agent, Gmail and Outlook, Slack, Discord and WhatsApp.
- MCP
- Tool servers for Gmail, Outlook, Mailchimp and Givebutter, and your own MCP servers per workspace.
- Guardrails
- Tool-level rules for what each agent may do, and an activity log of what it did.
- The web app
- A Next.js app to run workspaces, agents, files and settings.

Run it yourself
1. Clone it
git clone https://github.com/openlazarus/lazarus.git, then run ./setup.sh.
2. Configure it
Copy each package’s .env.example. You need a Supabase project (cloud or self-hosted) and an Anthropic API key; email needs a domain you control.
3. Run it
Start lazarus-api (a Dockerfile is included) and lazarus-ui. The self-hosting guide covers storage, email and production.

Questions
Is Lazarus open source?
Yes. The agent runtime and the web app are on GitHub at github.com/openlazarus/lazarus under the Apache License 2.0.
What isn’t open source?
The orchestrator the hosted product uses to give each workspace its own machine and to handle credits and billing. You don’t need it to self-host: you run one lazarus-api for your workspaces and pay your model provider directly.
Can I self-host it for free?
Yes. The licence costs nothing. You pay for your own servers, your Supabase project and your Anthropic API usage.
Which AI models does it use?
Agents run on the Claude Agent SDK, so self-hosting needs an Anthropic API key. The hosted product routes models through the Lazarus AI Router.
What does OpenLazarus charge?
Designing your system at /build is free. Managed hosting, developer support, headless AI access and AI-Architect consultancy are on the pricing page.
Can I use it commercially?
Yes. Apache-2.0 allows commercial use, modification and distribution, provided you keep the licence and notices.
